Road connections continue to improve in the Moka area, especially with the opening of the Verdun Bypass Road on Wednesday 21 June 2023.

This new road links the village of Alma to the M3 motorway near the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex. A new connection that will enable people coming from the East of the island to get directly to Ebene or Port Louis from the motorway, without having to go through the village of Verdun and the St Pierre Bypass Road.

The plus for Moka is that access to the heart of the island will be much faster and more direct, easing congestion on the main traffic arteries, including the A7 road at the Verdun interchange and the St Pierre Bypass Road. It will result in smoother traffic flow and less rush-hour jams.

The new access road to the M3 motorway also includes a bike path. It provides a safe environment that supports the use of alternative means of transport, especially soft mobility.

The new Verdun interchange is underway!

The foundation stone for the future Verdun interchange was also laid, in line with the sustained pace of this road transformation to better serve Moka and connect the area to the rest of the island.

The new interchange is scheduled to open in mid-2024 and will be located between the Côte d’Or National Sports Complex and the existing Verdun flyover. It will ultimately provide a direct link between the Verdun Bypass Road and the St Pierre Bypass Road, one of the main roads running across Moka Smart City; this will considerably reduce morning traffic jams along the A7 road. Access to the city’s various neighbourhoods will also be improved, especially during rush hour.

2023-2024: Moka is on the move

In view of the momentum created by these fast-advancing road infrastructure developments, 2024 promises to be a decisive year for mobility in the region. Other construction projects that will further improve the traffic flow in the centre of the island include:

  • connection of Ebene and the M1 motorway to the St Pierre Bypass Road in February 2024;
  • a link between the M3 motorway and the St Pierre Bypass Road in mid-2024; and
  • the operation of a Metro Express line in Moka, with 3 stations at Telfair, Helvétia and Saint Pierre.

This is to say that road accessibility will improve significantly over the next few years, making daily commute around the Moka area easier.
