Moka Trail 11: Elevate the trail experience!

Get ready to enjoy breathtaking views and iconic routes for the 11th edition of the Moka Trail on Saturday 7 October 2023. Find out more...

The Moka Trail is a key event in the Mauritian trail calendar, bringing together over 2,000 trail lovers every year. Backed by an experienced organising team and breathtaking scenery in the heart of the island, this race has become an iconic event that generates a lot of enthusiasm among trail running enthusiasts.

This Moka Smart City initiative was launched over 10 years ago to promote sports and a healthy, dynamic lifestyle in the heart of the island. The Moka Trail celebrates the very essence of trail running with a combination of authenticity and thrills. Trail running originally emerged from the motivation of runners to enjoy their sport in an unspoilt natural setting in order to bask in the beauty of the landscapes and learn how to get around with little or no assistance in a demanding environment for both body and mind. It promotes human relationships based on simplicity, friendliness, sharing and valuing diversity.

Starting from the scenic village of Beau Bois, there will be four races to choose from:

  1. Fun Jog (5km)
  2. Deux Mamelles (7km)
  3. Petit Both (15km)
  4. Grand Pouce (30km)

Registration will be open from Monday 7 August 2023 until midnight on Friday 15 September 2023 (unless the maximum number of 2,500 participants is reached beforehand).

Deux Mamelles – 7km

This intermediate-level trail run demands a certain degree of fitness but remains within reach of amateur trail runners looking for a bit for challenge. This year, Deux Mamelles will feature an exciting route with a wide range of terrain, challenging ascents and descents, and varied landscapes, each one more spectacular than the previous.

The 7km race departs in the village of Beau Bois and follows a route through verdant sugarcane fields, taking runners to the foot of the beautiful Deux Mamelles Mountain, and weaving through the heart of a lush forest on a single-track trail. This race provides the quintessential running experience.

Le Petit Both – 15 km

The distinguishing characteristic of this race is that it leads to the pass between two of the most iconic mountains of the island, Le Pouce and Pieter Both.

The course is a bit more demanding, alternating between crossing steep passes and valleys with a pastoral setting, topped off with the famous Malenga stairs.

A long trail runs through dense foliage from the village to the pass that will allow participants to make their way between Le Pouce and Pieter Both Mountains. They will then head back into the lush greenery carpeting Vallée de Bernardin de St-Pierre and Vallée des Prêtres below.

The Petit Both course joins the Grand Pouce track at Walmykie before heading towards the Crève Coeur pass. The trail runners will proceed up the renowned Malenga stairs before following the trail winding around Deux Mamelles. Finally, a downhill run across sprawling sugarcane fields will take them to the finish line in Beau Bois for a well-deserved rest.

A racing experience that combines a technical terrain with breathtaking scenery!

Le Grand Pouce - 30km

This is the event’s longest and most technical race, putting the endurance and motivation of participants to the test. Despite the challenge, hundreds of seasoned trail enthusiasts sign up each year to take on Le Grand Pouce.

Runners will take a dirt track from Beau Bois to the foothills of Le Pouce Mountain and climb its slopes. They will then tackle a rather technical section heading down to the Dauguet parking before facing a succession of uphills and downhills in the heart of Vallée Pitot.

The race will continue through enchanting scenery, from the slopes of the mythical Pieter Both to the village of Crève Cœur. Runners will then make their way up the winding Malenga stairs before going around Deux Mamelles.

Turning their backs to the mountains, they will head into the final part of the race across sugarcane fields to reach the race village.

This is certainly not an easy trail, but the beauty of the surrounding nature makes every step worth it!

This challenging race is specially designed for trained runners!

Distribution of bibs

From this year, the association promoting trail running in Mauritius, Rando Trail & Nature (RTN), is encouraging organisers to distribute only race bibs and no longer provide runners with race packs. The aim is to get back to the very essence of trail running, which is to connect with nature and reduce the environmental impact of races held each year on the island. Welcoming this step, the organising team of the Moka Trail will be handing out race bibs only this year. As a reminder, the goodies included in the Moka Trail race pack since the 1st edition are gifts from our sponsors and do not relate to the registration fees paid by runners.

The distribution of race bibs will take place on Wednesday 4 October 2023 from 10.00am to 7.00pm at Decathlon Bagatelle. Please remember to bring along your ID card and ROAG reference number.
