Last weekend, the District Council of Moka organised a clean-up campaign, in which the citizen collective, Moka’mwad, was highly engaged.

Moka, a sustainable city

Head to Saint Pierre bazar (market). Moka’mwad set up and ran an informative stall at Saint Pierre market for three days, in the context of the “Kampagn Netwayaz Nasional,” a national clean-up campaign that took place in the different neighbourhoods of Moka (Montagne Ory, Beau Bois, La Laura, Valetta and Bonne Veine) last weekend.

Moka’mwad, a citizen collective, is committed to contributing to the improvement of the quality of life in Moka. It is only natural that sustainable development and eco-citizenship are at the top of its agenda. “This campaign has allowed us to make great strides in our shared efforts to make Moka a better city for everyone,” shares Ketty Lim, Head of the citizen initiative. We drew on this event to organise a series of workshops that sensitise the region’s inhabitants to the good habits they need to form, and to the potential solutions for better waste management.”

Little gestures to save the planet

Emilie Chelin, founder of Good old Thyme, kick-started the festivities with simple, yet practical tips on reducing plastic consumption and cutting down on waste in one’s daily life. “I really enjoyed meeting passersby and sharing tips with them,” she says. Emilie’s advice is to ban single-use plastic, increase second-hand consumption, set aside material things in favour of experiences, and to eat locally and seasonally—to name a few. Are you a DIY person? Emilie even demonstrated how to transform an old t-shirt into a grocery bag!

Making your own skincare products is an achievable option, and Karine Boussaroque of ‘Les ateliers de K’ showed us just how. During one of her practical workshops, the naturopath shared the recipe for a gentle cleansing gel: great for your skin… and for the planet. “Making your own cosmetic products plays a big part in living a more eco-friendly life. The raw materials used are natural, organic and environmentally-friendly (and the packaging is recyclable),” she maintains. “This is an excellent initiative and I sensed genuine interest among the participants,” she adds.

Upcycling: recycling that matters

Last Saturday and Sunday, several beneficiaries of ‘Baz’Art Kreasion’—a project by ENL Foundation—hosted a workshop to make jewellery, bags and ornamental objects from old magazines and newspapers. Their goal? To encourage people to give unused products a second life, because upcycling enables you to reduce your carbon footprint while also creating brand-new, unique objects! « Baz’Art Kreasion provides employment for unemployed women by training them and assigning them the task of creating novel objects through upcycling, shares Priscilla Vencatapillay, Project Coordinator. This involvement has also allowed us to make people aware of our activities.”

The eco-activist artist, Kan Chan Kin, is also an expert in upcycling. More specifically, he creates musical instruments from waste he stumbles upon in nature, in the city or in the trash cans of local factories. “For many years now, I have been assembling ethnic instruments that are rarely found in Mauritius, like the didgeridoo, and I share my manufacturing techniques by conducting workshops for children. It’s a great way to reuse items and limit your consumption, while also democratising access to music,” explains Kan. During his interactive performance in Moka, the artist was able to chat with curious members of the audience, play alongside other musicians, and exchange a few words with the children, who were overjoyed at the sight of these strange-looking instruments!
