What if we told you that video games like Fortnite or Rise of the Tomb Raider were partly produced in Mauritius? We offer you an immersion into the exciting world of the Steamroller Animation studio.
After a brilliant career in the USA, Mauritian Jalil Sadool, a video game and animation effect enthusiast, set up his own studio in Florida, Steamroller Animation. He wanted to create true-to-life video game and movie characters. It was a quick success! With impressive projects behind him (Avatar, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The World of Narnia, etc.), Jalil enjoys a well-established reputation in the industry.
Back on our island, Jalil wanted to create opportunities for Mauritians who are passionate about the world of animation and opened a branch of his studio on the island. Located in The Pod building at Vivéa Business Park, it now has 11 “Steammates” – all promising talents! “We wanted our studio to be well located
and easily accessible for the team. Vivéa is ideal. The architecture of the place and the natural setting of the park are conducive to our creative work,” says Naadia Manuoullah, the Studio Manager.
Creativity is key
The Steamroller branch in Moka makes the animation sector more accessible to Mauritians. There are a variety of positions ranging from IT technician to technical artist. On a daily basis, in addition to making their characters obey the laws of physics, the team members make sure to bring each animation to life by infusing a unique personality to each one of them, or by working on the details of the environments and textures. This is quite exciting!
Games that are “Made in Moka”!
Steamroller’s Mauritian team is proud to have contributed to the production of the video game Curse of the Deadwood, which required at least 8 years of work!
