Rezidan
Moka’s flagship cultural project
Rezidan is a powerful word used by Moka to invite established and emerging talent, and artists’ collectives to share their ideas. After a successful soft launch with Cendrine Bolaram, the first
residencies began in July 2022. Moka is more than ever committed to culture. Discover an ambitious cultural programme that promises to boost the art scene in Mauritius!
La Kocotte Artistique, a platform for interaction and the development
of artists
La Kocotte Artistique promotes art practice and its professionalisation
by providing artists with studios at subsidised rental rates. Three of the five studios are now fitted and set aside for the artists involved in the Rezidan programme in order to create an internal dynamic and encourage interaction and collaboration. The studios’ common space has been redesigned by Jugaad with a mural by Max Anish Gowriah and is ideally suited for this purpose!
Did you know that Les Kocottes, developed
by Moka Smart City,
which houses La Kocotte Artistique, consists of former poultry houses converted into a dynamic space for artistic, citizenship and learning initiatives. Tenants include the Moka’mwad collective, Made in Moris and the TIPA association.
About Rezidan
Rezidan comprises two distinct components: public art and encouraging art practice through residencies. Moka Smart City now offers a continuous cycle of residencies to artists, who are provided with all the support required to explore their creative potential: from mentorship and workspace to research tools and financial support for projects.
The artists are encouraged to use their residency to develop their personal practice. If they wish, they can also produce works
for the city’s cultural projects (including exhibitions). Their work is displayed during open houses that normally take place
every three months. “Overall, this concept will democratise access to art and culture, introduce young people to new vocations, professionalise art practice and turn Moka into a hub for art and culture,” says Mathieu.
Emergence, Blooming Point and Mokassiens: Residencies for everyone
Three residencies – Emergence, Blooming Point and Mokassiens – have been designed to promote different art practices.
Emergence, in collaboration with Imaaya,
is aimed at artists (emerging, of course) working in the field of visual arts and contemporary art. The first artists selected
by the committee – Hermine Studio, Meekshuma Nayeck and Palvishee Jeewon – are mentored by the gallery’s curator, Charlie d’Hotman and established artists working
in the city. The experience allows them to improve their practice and work on
a personal project or experiment freely.
Mokassiens is a collective
documentary photography residency. Three photographers, Anne-Sarah Nicolin, Meha Desai and Laurent de Froberville, joined the first cohort in July 2022.
They were invited to portray the theme through a photographic essay made in the streets of Petit Verger and Saint Pierre. Their work will be exhibited in an outdoor installation in the Telfair neighbourhood. Meha Desai opened Rezidan’s first Art Talk with Hermine Studio artists.
Finally, Blooming Point welcomed its
first resident artists, Raymond Levantard (Mauritius) and Félix Duclassan (Reunion). They will explore freehand drawing in workshops, body movement experiments and meditation exercises in April 2023.
