What is “Aye Oh Tee”?! IoT is short
for “Internet of Things”. Perhaps you immediately think of your kettle connecting to YouTube and your
pillow choosing between two TikTok challenges, but that’s not exactly it. Don’t worry, you are not the first one to be intrigued by this strange expression! We will tell you everything you need to know about it.
So, IoT is actually everywhere?
You could not have put it better. It is already well integrated into your daily life, like the oven that automatically turns off when the cake is ready, personal assistants like Alexa that enable you to take voice control of your home (“Alexa, make some gâteaux piment!” – OK, we’re not quite there yet), the watch that monitors your sports performance or the quality of your sleep. At home and outside, a wealth of data is recorded by our everyday objects to help us better manage our lives.
IoT is even being deployed at city level: in Barcelona, for example, the technology is
used for transportation management, traffic management, city lighting and green space management. Remote sensors identify the
city’s requirements in real time to better serve its users. To sum up, it is easy to quickly find
an available parking space or connect to free Wi-Fi in Barcelona while waiting for your bus (electric, of course)! In addition, quickly finding a parking space enables you to drive less, create less traffic jams and contribute to reducing CO2 emissions!
Let’s start with a proper definition.
In short, IoT refers to our everyday objects that are connected to the Internet through sensors that allow them to share digital data with other devices – a smartphone, for example. Think again about your kettle: imagine how practical it would be if it was able to send a notification to your smartphone when the water is hot!
IoT is aimed at making the real world smarter through data sharing. And that applies to many different areas.
