Moka, the beating heart of culture

Moka, the beating heart of culture

In recent years, Moka has set itself a clear goal: to make culture part of everyday life and accessible to everyone. Concerts, exhibitions, workshops, artist residencies… here, art steps out of galleries and into the streets. Whether on stage, in public spaces or under the stars, every cultural initiative is an opportunity to discover, create and come together at the heart of the island.

A vibrant, inclusive cultural scene

Concerts that bring people together

Each year, Moka comes alive with two major free music Events open to all: Fet Lamizik in June and the big end-of-year concert at the Telfair Amphitheatre. Together, they attract more than 10,000 people in a festive and welcoming atmosphere.

Spaces for exchange and creativity

Throughout the year, Moka hosts art talks and creative workshops that encourage reflection and inspiration. A new series of discussions on intangible heritage has recently started, aiming to highlight and preserve our shared cultural roots. Creative workshops also invite everyone to take part, regardless of skill or experience.

Art that transforms the city

In Moka, culture is a shared project. That’s why several open calls are launched every year to encourage residents to contribute. One striking example is the colourful three-metre mural created by local citizens in Telfair, now brightening up La Promenade.

Rezidan: supporting artists in their journey

Since 2022, the Rezidan programme has been helping Mauritian artists, emerging or established, by offering them a creative space at Les Kocottes in St Pierre, along with funding and personalised guidance. The aim is to give artists the right environment to grow, experiment and gain visibility in Moka.

“The Rezidan art residency gave me a dedicated space to focus on my artistic practice. I wanted to embark on an artistic adventure and meet people from the art world. Rezidan became that space. A place where I could connect with gallery owners and art enthusiasts. It offered the perfect environment for reflection and exploration, calm and inspiring, ideal for starting a new project. Driven to find my own visual language, I’ve now found my voice and was able to achieve one of my dreams: holding my first solo exhibition, with the support of Imaaya Gallery, our partner on the Rezidan project.”— Zilien, Rezidan artist
