Waste Sorting

What if we did better, together?

On an island like ours, every action counts. With limited land and a nearly full Mare Chicose landfill, it’s time to act! In Moka, we make waste sorting and recovery easy, helping reduce our environmental impact—starting now. After all, we all live on the same island… and it’s together that we can protect it.

Where to drop your waste in moka?

Moloks

Since October 2020, nine Molok recycling containers from the Finnish brand have been installed across four voluntary drop-off sites. You can deposit your recyclable waste there (paper/cardboard, glass, and plastic/aluminium), which will then be sent to the island’s various recycling partners.

Spacious and easy to use, each Molok site includes clear sorting guides to help you do it right.

Additional drop-off points across Moka

Beyond the Moloks, several other sorting initiatives exist throughout the region. Let’s work together for more efficient waste management!

Where does your waste go?

Where does your waste go?

The waste collected through our drop-off points is handled by our specialised provider, Green Ltd.
Upon reception, a portion of this waste is locally processed and recovered—often shredded to extract reusable raw materials or reintegrated into industrial cycles. These materials are then sold or reused across various industries, contributing to a circular economy and sustainable development.

However, waste that cannot be treated locally is exported to certified facilities for environmentally compliant processing.
This system ensures both local recovery where possible and secure treatment when needed.

How to sort correctly?

Did you know?

Just one item in the wrong bin can contaminate an entire container!

And when bins are nearly full, some people leave their bags beside them instead of using another nearby point…

The result? Inefficient sorting and wasted effort.

But with a little care, we could recycle up to 100% of our waste. Let’s go!

Put the right waste in the right bin

With simple colour codes and clear signage at each site, sorting becomes second nature:

Blue bin

Paper & cardboard

Magazines, books, envelopes, egg cartons, cereal boxes, cigarette packs…

Green bin

Glass only

Bottles, jars, perfume flasks…

Yellow bin

Plastic & aluminium

Water and soda bottles, caps, detergent bottles, plastic toys, cans, clean food tins…

Sorting starts on site

In Moka, environmental commitment goes beyond households. It starts at the very foundations.

All buildings developed by the City aim for LEED® certification, and we strongly encourage other developers to follow suit.

That means:

  • A mandatory construction waste management plan from the design phaseUn plan de gestion des déchets de chantier obligatoire dès la phase de conception
  • A clear goal: divert at least 50 to 75% of site waste to recycling streams
  • On-site sorting: wood, metal, concrete, plastic, cardboard… every stream matters
  • Less than 40 kg of waste per m² built: a sustainable standard to meet

Why does it matter?

Because over 30% of global waste comes from construction. In Moka, we tackle the issue at the source—building a more sustainable city today.
