Moka, the heart of solidarity

You’ve probably already heard of Moka’mwad, maybe at an event at the amphitheatre or during a workshop at La Kocotte. But do you really know what the citizen collective of Moka City is all about? Here’s a closer look.

Moka’mwad is a catalyst for solidarity and civic initiatives. Its mission? To empower anyone who wants to improve life in Moka to take action by offering guidance, resources, and visibility. “Moka’mwad’s purpose is to create a city where solidarity primes, where everyone feels involved in shaping a vibrant and liveable Moka,” says Ketty Lim Ka Lam, Manager of the Moka’mwad collective.

The collective focuses on six key areas to help build an inclusive, sustainable and dynamic city:

Voices of our partners

“What motivated me to reach out to Moka’mwad was the human values and solidarity that the collective promotes. I saw it as a genuine opportunity to make a tangible difference in people’s lives, through inclusive, community-driven projects. Together, we set up an educational support programme for children with learning difficulties. Thanks to fun workshops and personalised support, they could progress at their own pace in a caring, encouraging space. I saw children grow in confidence, become more engaged at school, and reveal skills they had never dared to express before.”– Annick Retourné, teacher

Moka’mwad provided a room at La Kocotte free of charge and took care of project communication to ensure children could benefit from educational support.

“We decided to partner with Moka’mwad because we share the same commitment to caring for people in our region. For World Health Day, we joined forces to offer not just free health screenings, but also a space for conversation, reassurance and awareness-raising. Health isn’t just about treatment it’s also about prevention and support. This initiative helped many people check in on their health, get peace of mind, and detect risks they may not have known about. It’s small actions like these that make a real impact.”– Mélanie Moutou, Marketing Manager, C-Care Wellkin

Moka’mwad organised the event on La Promenade in Telfair, designed the communication materials, and provided the venue and equipment to improve access to healthcare for all.

“First aid training is essential, everyone should have access to it. Knowing how to react in an emergency can make all the difference. With the Moka’pav sov enn lavi project, we wanted to train and empower citizens to care for one another. It’s more than just learning techniques, it’s about creating a culture of solidarity, prevention and mutual aid. In a more human city, everyone should be able to reach out and help others when it counts.”– Mons Prakash N Chadee, Director, St John Ambulance Training Institution

Moka’mwad supported the initiative by providing a space at La Kocotte for training sessions and regularly promoting call for registration.

“Partnering with Moka’mwad came naturally. They share our vision of making opportunities for growth accessible. Their welcoming workspace allowed us to organise Young Engineers holiday sessions, where children explored STEM in a fun, safe setting. Kids aged 6 to 12 built LEGO-type models, while discovering concepts like centrifugal force, in a playful, accessible way. Beyond STEM, the sessions nurtured teamwork, creativity, and perseverance. Many children discovered a new passion, and all gained confidence and a sense of achievement. For parents, it offered meaningful, convenient activities in a space close to the bus station, shops, offices and restaurants. ” – Kristel Kung & Darrell Lai Choo, Loportinite Avanse.

Moka’mwad provided the La Kocotte space and promoted the STEM workshops on its platforms to encourage scientific discovery from an early age.

“Together with Moka’mwad, we’ve run impactful awareness campaigns around sexual health, HIV, STIs and substance use. For World Health Day, our teams from PILS and CUT led open discussions, offered screenings, and distributed condoms and prevention materials. We were also present at Fet Lamizik dan Moka with a similar outreach effort. As part of the Support Don’t Punish campaign, we hosted a discussion at the Kocottes led by people with direct experience in the field of substance use. These actions helped raise awareness among Mokassiens, break taboos, and spark dialogue, even within families.”– Jacques Achille, Director of Strategic Communication and Prevention, PILS.

Moka’mwad provided spaces at key events for awareness-raising, and made the Kocottes’ central courtyard available for the Support Don’t Punish campaign event.

“At Decathlon, our mission is to make sport accessible to everyone. Moka’mwad shares our values: building community, inclusion, and developing grassroots projects. So working with a committed, local collective like Moka’mwad was an obvious choice. Together, we’ll soon be launching a sports library at the Telfair amphitheatre. The idea? To let anyone, children, young people, adults or seniors  try a new sport or enjoy their favourite one, without financial or logistical barriers. It’s a simple, tangible way to break down obstacles to sport and promote physical activity in a public space.”– Sébastien Empeigne, Marketing & E-Commerce Leader, Decathlon Mauritius

Moka’mwad facilitated partner coordination and oversaw the implementation of the project to help make sport more accessible for everyone.

It gives people of all ages and backgrounds free access to sports equipment and the chance to try new activities  all in exchange for a simple ID card.
