2020 was a very eventful year filled with a few defining moments! The continuous work progress of the Smart City, the numerous citizen and solidary initiatives of the collective Moka’mwad and the dynamism of our sport clubs Moka Rangers and Synergy. Take a look back at the highlights that have marked this year.
Despite the crisis, Moka Smart City continues to develop for the benefit of its residents. On the property development front, the first homeowners have moved in at Les Promenades d’Helvétia. The city also obtained approval from the Economic Development Board to double its surface area.
Various new initiatives have been launched, including the L’Avenir neighbourhood, the Bagatelle Hills residential development and Les Kocottes – former poultry houses that have been converted into a lively centre for artistic expression and citizen initiatives. Lastly, we are delighted to welcome the new U.S. embassy premises.
The year 2020 also marked the 8th edition of the Moka Trail, which attracted some 2,100 participants. Over 85km of tracks have been marked out for nature walk enthusiasts. Finally, complimentary POUND and Kids Gym classes are now available at the Telfair amphitheatre. In light of the health crisis, citizen engagement was a priority for Moka. The city witnessed various expressions of solidarity, from blood donations to food distribution, including a fundraising campaign during lockdown. In the wake of the MV Wakashio’s wreck, the city also participated in the national #sovnoulagon effort. More recently, over 800 residents of Moka came together for the second edition of the Neighbours’ Day!
And what would a smart city be without smart initiatives? Three key projects have been implemented: the installation of 4 voluntary drop-off points; the launch of the Moka Shuttle for people working in Telfair and Vivéa; and finally promoting soft mobility among businesses in the city through the use of scooters and electric bikes.
