From Monday 3 February 2020, children aged 6 to 9 years old will have the opportunity to learn fencing at Moka Rangers Sports Club. But why choose this sport? And how will this awareness training take place? We answer all your questions!

Fencing, a sport with values

“Fencing is a noble sport,” says the instructor for this new course, Caroline Mamet. “I like and recommend this sport, which provides a workout for both body and mind – and it’s really fun!” Fencing requires endurance, strategy, speed, flexibility and concentration. What’s more, it promotes respect for others and self-confidence. “This sport is highly beneficial for the development of children and will help them grow,” says Caroline.

A fencing enthusiast, she spends much of her time training for competitions. For over a year, she has been training to obtain her fencing instructor’s certificate. She manages the club alongside Kevin Museliah, a sport coach who has been teaching the discipline since 2014.

A gentle introduction

Caroline will offer awareness training. Parents need not worry since fencing is not dangerous at all even if it is a combat sport. “We have all the necessary equipment to protect our young fencers,” says the instructor. The 45-minute courses include an introduction to fencing and development of the necessary skills – concentration, reflexes, accuracy, etc. – in a playful and engaging way. One never stops learning in fencing!

Good to know for children who wish to improve their practice of the sport: Moka Rangers Sports Club holds tournaments two to three times a year. It is also twinned with and organises exchanges and competitions with La Buse, the largest fencing club in Reunion Island.

Don’t wait any longer to register your child: the course is limited to eight participants. Depending on demand, a second course may be offered.
