Smart City Scheme

A new way of thinking about cities

Launched in 2015 by the Government of Mauritius, the Smart City Scheme aims to create integrated urban spaces where people can live, work and enjoy life.

Inspired by the “15-minute city” concept, this approach focuses on planning urban areas where everything essential — learning, working, healthcare, shopping or leisure — is accessible within a 15-minute walk or bike ride.

Protecting nature and limiting urban sprawl

By grouping life’s essentials within planned zones, the Smart City Scheme helps:

Reduce car use and traffic congestion
Lower the environmental footprint of cities
Preserve more land for agriculture and green spaces

Annual allowance covering 50% of capital expenditure on green technologies
