Moka’mwad Collective teamed up with Les Ateliers de K to launch “An All-Natural and Organic Cosmetics Workshop in Moka.”

In 2019, the concept of Do It Yourself (DIY) is no secret. Today, this practice is increasingly seen as environmentally friendly, particularly when it comes to the circular economy or “upcycling,” concepts that are both linked to sustainable development. In the cosmetics world, it is quickly becoming evident that you only really need a few basic ingredients to make them yourself, and in a more eco-friendly way. In essence, DIY encourages responsible consumption and helps reduce waste. With this in mind, the Moka’mwad Collective teamed up with Les Ateliers de K to launch “An All-Natural and Organic Cosmetics Workshop in Moka.” An initiative that falls under the heading of « Moka’mwad Chek Sa », the first of many to come!

What is “Moka’mwad Chek Sa”?

“Moka’mwad Chek Sa” aims to promote all relevant initiatives taking place across the region of Moka. The Collective serves as a facilitator and assists various service providers. Through these collaborations, Moka’mwad seeks to highlight all the activities available to the inhabitants of the region, as well as to the general public, resulting in a greener city and more engaged citizens.

For instance, “Les Ateliers de K is an initiative that takes into account both sustainable development and eco-citizenship, issues that are extremely close to the Collective’s heart. This is why we decided to partner with them in launching “An All-Natural and Organic Cosmetics Workshop in Moka”  We also help them with the communication aspect of the workshops,” explains Ketty, Manager of the Collective.

An All-Natural and Organic Cosmetics Workshop in Moka

On the agenda: ingredients like aloe vera, coconut and shea butter, three of  ‘star’ ingredients. Under the guidance of naturopath Karine Boussaroque, participants learn to measure doses and use high-quality organic and natural products in the most efficient way possible. “This collaboration allows Mauritians to engage in a fun activity, while also becoming aware of the environment and the harmful nature of greenwashing,” Karine explains.

Participants have access to unique cosmetic recipes that can easily be replicated at home. In fact, the first two workshops attracted over a dozen participants. “I truly felt that all those who attended the workshop shared a common interest in eco-responsible consumption, a consumption that is respectful of nature,” confides Svenja, one of the workshop’s participants. DIY enthusiasts, lovers of organic products and those eager to try something new came together, at Turbine in Moka, to get their hands dirty: make their own skincare and hair care. An experience that was both educational and friendly, as explained by Nadisha and Juliana, two other participants that were won over by the concept:

“I was drawn to this initiative because I work in sustainable development. I must say that it is rather rare in Mauritius, and I cannot recommend it enough to others. I also regularly use the product I made during the workshop, and I’d love to be able to participate in an event like this one in my own workplace.” – Nadisha

“I had no idea this kind of workshop even existed in Mauritius until I stumbled upon Les Ateliers de K. I found the initiative fascinating, and the products we made during the workshops were really useful and efficient. I highly recommend it!” – Juliana
