Moka Rangers Sports Club will hold an open day in September 2019 for young footballers aged 5-13 years old.

Come and enjoy the open day!

Do you know any boys and girls aged 5-13 years old who love football? Spread the word and join in for a unique training session on the football ground at Lycée des Mascareignes between 10 am and noon on 7 September 2019. Following registration, the young players will take to the pitch for various technical workshops on dribbling, passing, shooting and running. An assessment of their technical abilities, coordination, speed, agility and discipline will also be conducted. The purpose of the event is to “recruit those interested into the football academy and identify the 10 best players, who will get a surprise on that day,” says Christopher Honglin, who is in charge of Moka Rangers Sports Club’s football section.

A pool of football talent

Moka Rangers Sports Club has a dozen football coaches and 160 players – including 2 girls for the time being! “We intend to set up a women’s team in the next two years and encourage girls to join the club,” says Christopher. According to him, their ambition is to promote football in the Moka region – a sports city. On the one hand, the aim is to train the youth and help them find the right balance between sports and school; and on the other, it’s about possibly giving footballers the chance to play in the regional, and then national first division to allow them to continue playing as adults.

The club also prepares youngsters who want to play at a professional level to make a living out of their passion for football. After 3 years working closely with SGK Heidelberg, the German club should soon welcome its first Mauritian trainees.

In July, 34 Moka Rangers Sports Club players represented Mauritius at the SGK Heidelberg’s prestigious U13 and U14 tournament in Germany. These lucky young athletes enjoyed cultural exchanges, enriching encounters and discovering new things during an unforgettable human and sporting experience in Europe.

Focus on social integration

The players selected to travel to Germany included 11 youth from underprivileged backgrounds. The club clearly has a social purpose. Through sponsorship some 30 children, it aims to encourage the youth from low-income social backgrounds to grow and develop through football. “The inclusion of disadvantaged children remains the club’s priority because we want to break down the social barrier to entry,” says Christopher.
