Moka’mwad teamed up with ENL Foundation and ESP Landscapers to pay tribute to World Environment Day, celebrated on the 5th June. They joined forces with the students of Mahatma Gandhi Secondary School (MGSS) in Moka to spruce up the front entrance to the school. The result: 959 plants were put in the ground.

Grab your shovels!

Ever since its inception in 2018, Moka’mwad has been committed to protecting the environment and has dedicated itself to improving the quality of life of Moka’s inhabitants. When MGSS Moka sought the help of Moka’mwad with a landscaping project, the Collective seized the opportunity to literally get its hands dirty. “We decided to lend a helping hand to this school, both as a facilitator and sponsor of the project. It seeks to enhance the school’s entrance with the creation of a beautifully landscaped area. Through this project, we hope to contribute to a culture of sustainable development and ecological citizenship. Together, we can build a greener world!” shares Ketty Lim of Moka’mwad.

The transformation began on May 27th with the help of a team of professional landscapers from ESP Landscapers, a company located in the area. Over 90 students from Form 1 to Upper 6 came together to hoe, dig and plant a variety of shrubs and plants, from palm kernels and Dracaena reflexa (commonly known as Song of India) to hibiscus flowers. This activity enabled them to spend a pleasant time outdoors with their classmates, under the supervision of their instructor, but also to learn from the experts at ESP Landscapers.

The reason we decided to focus on this project was, first and foremost, to teach the younger generation that protecting the environment can take the form of simple and easy actions.

Green attitude

Driven by a desire to transform the school’s entrance into a more welcoming environment, MGSS Moka used this initiative to awaken the students’ ecological spirit, while also enabling them to take part in a collaborative activity. The school’s principal, Kavita Bhuckory, explains: “World Environment Day is a gentle reminder that we all have a responsibility towards nature and need to play our part in preserving and protecting it. The reason we decided to focus on this project was, first and foremost, to teach the younger generation that protecting the environment can take the form of simple and easy actions.” Through this project, she hopes to position MGSS Moka—located at the very entrance of Moka—as a pleasant setting for both students and staff.

Cheerfulness, a collaborative spirit and a playful environment were prevalent, and the students were quick to express their pride upon completion of the works, on May 31st. “What a joy to work in such a green environment!” shares one of the students.

Yet another successful endeavour by Moka’mwad!
