ENL House is seeking to align with international energy efficiency standards

With a view to implementing a management system to optimise energy intensive sectors such as air conditioning, vehicles and other office equipment, the necessary steps are underway to achieve ISO 50001 certification for ENL House.

The relevant procedures have reached an advanced stage. The certification process is supervised by ISODOM, a company from Reunion Island. If everything goes according to plan, ENL House will become the first ISO 50001-certified building in Mauritius.

He places the initiative within the broader context of the ENL Group’s commitment to reduce its environmental footprint. “It reflects our ambition in the property development industry and for Moka Smart City. We are determined to create environmentally-friendly work-play-live areas,” he adds.

An independent audit is required to obtain ISO 50001 certification. “Various points will be assessed, including the direction of our energy policy. It will have to be consistent with the statutory requirements of the certification standard. The introduction of dashboards will be essential to ensure continuous monitoring and data collection as well as for the analytical aspect,” says Christophe Desvaux. The operational control of energy management is another key element of the certification process. According to him, continuous improvement is the real challenge. “We will have to conduct constant audits and make sure we take the necessary preventive and remedial actions to address any potential non-compliances. This means constantly challenging ourselves,” he says.

ISO 50001 was published in 2011 by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and offers organisations and enterprises around the world a clear framework for implementing an operational and sustainable energy management system.

Its objectives and methodology make it complementary to the ISO 9001 quality management and ISO 9001 environmental management standards. Based on a preliminary energy diagnostic, ISO 50001 sets the terms and conditions for an energy saving and rationalization strategy in line with sustainable development and corporate social responsibility requirements.
