Moka will host an agricultural market specialising in fresh, craft, local and ethical products every Saturday from 10am to 1pm starting in November. Let’s find out more from the founder of SensiBio, Aurore Rouzzi!

Lycée des Mascareignes welcomes visitors every Saturday for a farmers’ market featuring organic fruit and vegetables, chocolate, honey, gluten-free products, meat, deli, cheeses, yogurts, breads and cakes. “All participating fruit and vegetable producers are Ecocert or BioLokal certified,” says Aurore.

A rising trend

Farmers’ markets are popular in Mauritius and abroad. Rather than searching through impersonal supermarket shelves, an increasing number of consumers prefer to see and interact with the producers. Beyond the human aspect (and tastings!), these markets are popular for promoting the concept of “from farm to fork”, i.e. short channels.

About SensiBio

Aurore studied nature management and protection prior to specialising in organic farming – a “craft based on passion” that she has been honing for 8 years. SensiBio aims to raise awareness, train and provide support in terms of organic farming in Mauritius. The company offers regular training on how to grow your organic vegetable garden and workshops on organic cooking, 100% natural cosmetic and DIY natural household products, among others. Its activities also include the setting up and visits to agricultural farms as well as farmer support.

SensiBio held an Eco-Bio Forum with recycling and zero waste entrepreneurs, Mauritian recycling companies, organic fruit and vegetable producers, agri-retailers and zero waste importers in June at Lycée des Mascareignes. “Such events are important to build awareness as they promote and showcase local initiatives, thus supporting a solidarity-based local commercial fabric,” she says. Save the date for the second edition of the Eco-Bio Forum on 7 and 8 December 2019 at Lycée des Mascareignes!
