No, you’re not dreaming! Nature’s Basket has just opened at Les Allées commercial centre in Helvétia. This all-natural supermarket selling almost entirely organic products including non-perishable foods, bulk goods, fresh vegetables, kombucha and cosmetics is already attracting locals and shoppers from further afield.

Organic products for every taste

Nature’s Basket was launched in mid-July by Mantra Wellness, which has brought more than 1,000 organic brands to the Mauritian market over the past 6 years. More than a supermarket, it is a destination. “Our aim is to leverage our years of expertise in the field to bring together local and imported organic products under one roof,” says Sunnil Hassamal, the CEO of Mantra Wellness. So just grab a vakoa (pandanus)-braided basket, as in years gone by, and you’re your pick from a wide range of tasty and pesticide-free products such as legumes, vegetable oils, vitamins and dietary supplements, tea, herbal tea, cereals and toiletries.

Most of these products are imported from the USA, Italy, India and Spain. You are certainly familiar with brands like Bob’s Red Mill, Organic Traditions or 24 Mantra Organic, which are sold in supermarkets across the island! But Nature’s Basket also supports local natural producers through selling their fresh vegetables, soaps (The Body Bar), spices (Spice Island), honey, breads and jams. Freshly prepared smoothies and other soft drinks will soon be available at an outward-facing counter.

Zero waste bulk

Nature’s Basket supports your zero-waste lifestyle with 25 different bulk products (oil, rice, legumes and cereals). So don’t forget your glass jars, food containers and reusable bags!

Why organic food?

Embracing an organic lifestyle isn’t just a fad: it is essential for the future well-being of our planet and mankind. Adopting organic farming practices means saying no to synthetic pesticides, respecting ecosystems by fostering crop diversification and finally preserving soil fertility as well as insect and birdlife. Pesticides actually “play a decisive role in the decline of pollinating insects” (Le Monde Diplomatique). They also acidify soils and destroy microbial life while impacting habitats and human health – especially farmers, who are directly exposed to chemicals.

Nature’s Basket regularly holds conferences with experts to help raise awareness of the benefits of organic farming among the Mauritian people. Keep an eye out for the supermarket’s next event by following its Facebook page!
