Global Recycling Day was celebrated on 18 March 2022. Moka Smart City launched the Recycling Bottles Challenge to mark the occasion and raise awareness of the value of waste. Let us tell you more about it!

Waste recycling is rooted in the development approach of Moka. The city has come up with the Recycling Bottles Challenge, a fun concept to invite the Mauritian people to take an active part in recycling and take its commitment to another level while aiming to increase general awareness of the importance of recycling our waste.

The idea is simple: over the course of four Saturdays from 26 March to 16 April, drop your PET plastic bottles at a dedicated stand at Bagatelle Mall, Kendra and Les Allées shopping centres. You will receive a raffle ticket for each bottle you drop off for a chance to win one of two grand prizes!

“We have always been able to count on the support and enthusiasm of the people of Moka and Mauritius in general for our new community initiatives. We are therefore very happy to launch this original initiative, which is a collective effort to raise large-scale awareness. This is a first test, but we hope to continue the operation and extend it to other waste categories with the support of the Mauritian people,” says Moka Smart City’s Land & Business Development Manager, Olaf Boullé.

Save the dates to participate:

  • Saturday 26 March: Bagatelle Mall (food court)
  • Saturday 2 April: Les Allées, Helvétia (food court)
  • Saturday 9 April: Kendra, Saint Pierre (food court)
  • Saturday 16 April: Bagatelle Mall (food court)

Attractive prizes

This initiative is open to all and two great prizes are up for grabs to encourage mass participation of the Mauritian people:

  • The first person whose name is drawn by lot will win a voucher to be used in Winner’s supermarkets. How much will it be worth? The amount of the voucher will be the same as the proceeds from the sale of the bottles to the recycler, Reso Green! You must have surely realised that prize value will increase with every bottle collected! So make sure to encourage your family, friends and colleagues to take part in this initiative.
  • The second person whose name is drawn by lot will receive a voucher of the same amount as the first one from Moka Smart City, which is committed to doubling the final prize value.

As a bonus, the five winners will each receive a pair of MOKA polarised glasses made by Helios Eyewear from PET plastic collected using the city’s Molok containers. This is further proof that instead of being disposed of anywhere, our waste deserves our full attention in terms of recycling for reuse!

Moka Smart City, a sustainable commitment to waste segregation

This original approach reaffirms Moka Smart City’s commitment to sustainable development. While waste sorting is not yet an automatic behaviour in Mauritius – we recycle only 6% of our waste –, Moka is committed to raising awareness and encouraging this trend.

The city has been equipped with 12 Molok bins since 2020. They enable the residents and users of the region to sort their waste efficiently. The containers are located in the main areas of Moka Smart City – on the way in to Vivéa Business Park, in front of Synergy Sport & Wellness Institute in Helvétia, opposite the new Shell filling station in Telfair and in the Courchamps residential area. Bins are provided to recycle paper/cardboard, glass and plastic/aluminium. Non-recyclables can be disposed of in a fourth bin. Explanatory signs are also provided to guide the Mauritian people in their action. The time to act is now, so let’s get started!
