Whether you are into thrillers or sci-fi and no matter how connected you are to the world of books, you will be delighted by the travelling library initiative brought to you by Moka Smart City!
Spark everyone’s interest in reading
The Moka’mwad citizen collective has joined forces with the Institut français de Maurice (IFM) to provide a travelling library that visits the neighbourhoods of Moka, from Helvétia to Saint Pierre and through Bagatelle every second weekend of the month. In addition to a large collection of books for children, teens and adults to read on the spot, the travelling library will offer monthly fun and educational activities with different themes. IFM subscribers will be able to return their books and borrow new ones without having to travel to Rose Hill, and non-subscribers will be able to take up a subscription on the spot.
This initiative launched in conjunction with IFM is inspired by a project carried out in New York, USA to make reading more fun and accessible to all. This is just what Moka wants to do. “We aim to make literature available to everyone in Moka. Instead of going to specific places, the travelling library comes directly to them, in their usual places of leisure. Avid and reluctant readers alike are invited to gather around the library. And I promise they will find a novel, a comic book, a documentary, a magazine or even an audio book that meets their interest!” says Ketty Lim Ka Lan, who is in charge of Moka’mwad.
Strategic partnership with IFM
“After the pandemic in 2021, we have developed many initiatives to get closer to our subscribers and increase our visibility and recognition among new audiences. The IFM on the Road service was born out of the wish to reach out beyond our walls. In order to support the travelling library, our librarians have agreed to share their expertise and experience in books and educational and cultural activities with the people of Moka. The partnership with Moka’mwad was an opportunity to strengthen our presence in Moka and outside IFM,” says the Director, Muriel Piquet-Viaux.
The maiden edition took place in May 2022 at Kendra Shopping Centre in Saint Pierre and was a great success: many Mauritians took some time – and even an hour or two for the most avid ones looking for new reading material – to wander through the shelves filled with books of all kinds!
